On September 15th, the latest update of Essential Science Indicators (ESI) by Clarivate Analytics brought exciting news for the School of Physics at Southwest Jiaotong University. For the first time, the physics discipline at the university has entered the global top 1% in ESI rankings, marking a significant milestone in the development of the school's academic disciplines.

Since 2017, the university's library has been releasing reports titled "Southwest Jiaotong University ESI Discipline Analysis," continuously tracking the relevant ESI data for the university. This initiative aimed to unearth promising disciplines and provide valuable insights for the university to understand the dynamics of its academic fields and optimize resource allocation. Preliminary analysis had indicated that physics was one of the most promising disciplines at Southwest Jiaotong University, consistently showing stable and sustained growth over the past two years. With this achievement, Southwest Jiaotong University now boasts nine disciplines that have entered the global top 1% in ESI, including engineering, materials science, computer science, chemistry, social sciences, earth sciences, environmental/ecological sciences, physics, economics, and business studies. Notably, the engineering discipline has even secured a place in the global top 1‰ in ESI.

In the latest ESI rankings, there are a total of 887 institutions with physics disciplines in the global top 1% (including 64 mainland Chinese universities). Southwest Jiaotong University stands at the 885th position globally. Among the new entrants from mainland China, four institutions have joined this elite group: Jinan University, Harbin Engineering University, Northeastern University, and Southwest Jiaotong University. According to statistical data, Southwest Jiaotong University's physics discipline has published a total of 2,319 papers in SCI and SSCI journals during the evaluation period, garnering a total of 21,143 citations with an average of 9.12 citations per paper. Additionally, the discipline boasts 14 highly-cited papers.
